2015 Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour

It’s been a long time since I have been able to offer a deal anywhere close to this one – a First Growth, from the vintage of the century, at the lowest national price.

For those of you who (like me) remember the bygone days when First Growths were not only attainable but relatively “affordable”, this deal is a throw-back in time. Don’t miss it.

No, these cases didn’t fall off the back of a truck. They are not grey market nor private cellar. They are imported directly through Chateau Latour and have been delivered through the legal, licensed (and temperature-controlled) supply chain. As you may remember, Chateau Latour made news when they announced that it will no longer sell via futures. Instead, all Latour will now come through direct subsidiaries of Latour. This was released in 2020 by the chateau.

Again, take advantage of this unique circumstance.

To be clear: This wine is officially named Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour, nicknamed “Pauillac” (see the label below). Its simplest description is the THIRD wine of Chateau Latour. Or, as Chateau Latour itself puts it:

“Made every year since 1990, this is a qualitative selection from Forts de Latour [the second wine] and young vines. Le Pauillac receives the same meticulous care as the Grand Vin, both in the vineyard and in the winery. The notable differences are the age of the vines [around 40 years old for this wine], a lesser proportion of new oak [around 50%], and a higher proportion of Merlot [around 25%]. This distinguished and delicious wine is a welcome introduction to Chateau Latour.”

“In 2015, there is no doubting that Director Frederic Engerer and owner Francois Pinault are thrilled with what they have accomplished at Latour. Their three wines are hugely different in price, but all are extraordinary.

“There is not much produced, but if you can latch onto a bottle, the 2015 Pauillac offers a great introduction to what Engerer and Pinault have achieved at this Pauillac first-growth property (the smallest first-growth in the Medoc).

“The 2015 Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour is a blend of 54.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41.7% Merlot and 4.1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sails out of the glass at a fantastic clip, delivering wonderfully fragrant notes of baked blackberries, blueberry compote and redcurrant jelly with hints of licorice, red roses and cigar box. Medium-bodied, generously fruited, open-knit and tantalizingly drinkable right now, the palate is chock-full of expressive red and black fruits, featuring approachable, ripe, soft tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with compelling purity. Very impressive showing!”
