Here is one of the world’s greatest Rieslings – Grosset Polish Hill
Jeffery Grosset, the wine maker and proprietor of Grosset wines was named International Riesling Winemaker of the Year in 1998. In 2005, he was named one of the 50 most influential winemakers in the world. Finally, in 2007, his Polish Hill Riesling graced the cover of Wine Spectator as one of Australia’s best white wines. He has gone on continuing to win awards for this wine.
As wine critic Rod Smith has said, “Grosset’s Polish Hill tastes of water that was filtered through layers of glacial gravel, slate and shale.” It is completely dry and has a racing acidity that will keep it alive for years. Indeed, we had a 2005 at a slide this year and it was still absolutely gorgeous – the acidity had mellowed into that massive mouth-coating richness without weight that only Riesling can bring. To me it is all that is great about Australian Riesling; the pleasure of fruit is there, but matched by a clean crisp brightness. The finish is sensational in its length.
Or, to quote James Haliday “This is a ravishing riesling of the highest order, X-factor multiplied. Throw up any part (flesh, juice, skin, pith) of lime or lemons of any kind, add ethereal acidity and marvel at the elegance and length of the palate. Jeffrey Grosset is the undisputed king of the Clare Valley.”
In Australia this wine sells out the day the cellar doors open. It is so allocated that it’s been eight years since I have been able to sell them. But I finally, finally, finally got it again, and now is the time to buy.
