Is Chateau Malescot St. Exupery (Malescot) as good as Chateau Margaux?

With the 2012, the critics think so.

Call it a “sleeper of the vintage,” call it in the shadows, or perhaps consider Malescot a hidden gem. Whatever the case, I believe the 2012 vintage of Malescot matches the quality of the First Growths and at its price (especially compared to First Growths!), it can’t be beat.

The Wine Spectator Reviews:

2012 Chateau Malescot St. Exupery

“93-96 points.

“This is distinctive, with a roasted alder streak running through an enticing core of crushed plum, blackberry and black currant confiture flavors. Long and velvety on the finish, with bay, tobacco and black tea accents checking in. This is suave, with fruit and terroir in spades, particularly for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2025. 7,500 cases made. –JM”

2012 Chateau Margaux

“93-96 points.

“Shows a tight nose, but manages to convey pure, fresh notes of red fruit and violet. Almost sleek, with fine-grained tannins carrying the red currant paste and iron accents. The plum skin-tinged finish sings, displaying remarkable integration already. A very impressive showing today. Tasted non-blind. Score range: 93-96. –JM”

“Release price $397 [compared to $69.99!!!]

My own notes:

Nose: Blackberry, plum, violet, wet cedar, graphite, complex in tight layers. Palate: core of black fruit, very good definition, long, long finish. Drinks now, better in four, well go for 20.
